n a major upset at the 2025 WTA 1000 event in Montreal, World No. 2 Coco Gauff was eliminated in the Round of 16 by 18-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko. The match lasted just 62 minutes, with Mboko dominating 6-1, 6-4 in front of her home crowd on Saturday.
A Breakthrough Win for Canada’s Rising Star
Ranked WTA No. 85, Victoria Mboko saved all five break points she faced and broke Gauff’s serve four times, delivering a near-flawless performance. Her victory marks her first-ever WTA 1000 quarterfinal, and she will next face Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (WTA 51) — a winnable match on paper.
Gauff’s Struggles Continue After Roland-Garros Triumph
Gauff, the top seed in Montreal, managed to reduce her double faults to just six after committing a staggering 37 in her first two matches. But despite her improvement in consistency, she had no answer for Mboko’s aggression and composure under pressure.
“She really played a great match,” Gauff admitted to reporters. “I made some unforced errors, but I knew it would be tough today.”
Since winning her first Roland-Garros title in June, Gauff has faced a rough patch. She was ousted in the first round at Wimbledon, and now exits early in Montreal — raising questions about her form ahead of the US Open.
