A Hostile Welcome Turned Triumphant: Valentin Rongier Wins Over Rennes Fans on Debut
Initially met with hostility, former Nantes and Marseille midfielder Valentin Rongier delivered a strong performance on his debut for Stade Rennais, helping his new team defeat Olympique de Marseille 1-0 on Friday night. By full-time, the Rennes crowd had changed its tune — celebrating the player they had earlier questioned.
Rongier, who was greeted with two harsh banners from the home ultras, responded with a fierce display in midfield. By the final whistle, he had earned the respect of the stands and celebrated the win alongside his new teammates — and even shared a warm hug with former player and now pundit Habib Beye during the lap of honour.
The contrast was striking. Just weeks earlier, after his signing in mid-July, the Rennes supporter group RCK had voiced their disapproval. Their frustration stemmed from Rongier’s history with FC Nantes (2001–2019), Rennes’ long-time rival, and his past gestures toward the Breton club when wearing yellow and green.
But football moves fast, and on the pitch, Rongier spoke with actions. His battle in midfield, composure under pressure, and leadership helped Rennes secure a statement win to start the season — and, in doing so, he may have started to rewrite his relationship with Roazhon Park.
